It's Been A Minute

Yikes. Last post more than a year ago. What can I say, school is busy. It is also awesome and satisfying and challenging. My soul is complete in a way it hadn’t been for a while. Not because I love school so much, but rather because it’s something I’m doing just for myself. After years of staying home with kids and working in a job that took and didn’t give back enough to stay balanced, it is a revelation to do something that is just for me. And now, weirdly, that school has been disrupted in a way I never anticipated: QUARANTINE!

So, how are we all managing? We are one day into closed school for the kids, I technically still have finals and externship applications and conference applications to do, and I’m already feeling a little claustrophobic. There are at least 2 and a half weeks left to go.

Sew…

What’s on the list?

This should keep me busy for a while.

I’m currently drafting a double-breasted blouse with a camp collar and grown-on short sleeve. The plan is to make it up in the navy blue cherry cotton and possibly in the mustard Tencel twill (4.5 oz and gorgeous from Blackbird Fabrics, sorry this color is sold out). I may need two of these blouses. If not two blouses, likely a flowy pair of cropped wide-leg pants for the Tencel.

That beautiful black-on-black tartan? I got that on a trip to Scotland with my husband last summer and it’s destined to be a vest for him. The same goes for the brown tweed. I just ordered a copy of vintage McCall’s 5051, all I need to do is find fabric for the back of the vest but I have some ideas.

The green denim/twill on the bottom left is going to be some adapted Lander Pants. Some changes to the front pockets to make them a little softer looking, and a shaped belt between the back darts. I’ll post pics as I get it drafted.

My favorite and possibly the piece I’m most emotionally invested in is the green herringbone tweed (officially from the Isle of Harris and certified as Harris Tweed. I’ve toyed with a variety of outerwear ideas for this 3m cut. My signature moto? An anorak? Bomber? Blazer? I can’t quite decide. I keep waiting for something to feel just right for this one.

The last two cuts, the rust boiled wool and the self-striping sweater knit don’t have destinies yet. Possibly a Yates coat for the wool. I’m working on some other ideas for the knit.

Hopefully, we won’t be social distancing long enough for me to complete all of this and my school work and my yard work and my house projects, but it’s helping me stay busy.
